Bustling city, full of lights, flashy flourishing as scenery, the city is a face, neon lights are the eyes of the city, the formation of Qiongyuyu, is looking back from the shore, or drunk two forget in the river. Artist Ma Yujiang's solo project: Chengcheng - a popular love song written by lyricist Huang Weiwen - the legend says that infatuation tears will "fall the city".
When people talk about the concept of the city, it is very much like talking about a lover who is deeply loved, or was deeply loved, or has become indifferent. Artist Ma Yujiang uses direct and easily accessible documentary methods such as painting and video to choose a circuitous path into their current state, and uses first-hand materials of different dimensions to construct a spiritual picture of the ruins of modern urban life. For example, his works "March in Wan Chai" and "Pier" are based on his own practical life experience. He studied in Beijing from his hometown Jinan. Then to settle down in Hong Kong, in the city to find a deep identity positioning, cultural identity; Ma Yujiang lives in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, facing Victoria Harbor day and night - this is his real life; The twinkling lights of Victoria Harbour and the free sea breeze made him imagine the future: is this his own city?
In reality, people enjoy different degrees of calculated security, and at the same time, people are full of imagination about the unknown, no matter what the future picture is, we are still in love with the city we live in. Look for the possibility of "putting up another barricade" in everyday life - "Love is love/persistence/a banner/Who says it can't put up another barricade" (The Death of John Lennon). Another example is the installation "Expiration", which is irregularly looking for daily items that are about to expire, and facing a wider range of "expired" products, as in the face of reality and imagination, is to accept or discard the alternative.
Both Ningbo and Hong Kong are port cities, and the port is like an open window. The artist believes in the spirit of freedom and openness, and takes this as the basic idea and perspective to show the audience the landscape of contemporary port life and explore the temperament of the city. He asks himself and the audience: how far can our passion for the city go? Even if the neon can be extinguished, fireworks can thank, but the song can still be beautiful.
